Your child’s safety is very important to us. That’s why we recommend purchasing a seat for infants, under the age of two, and using an approved child restraint system in-flight.

All safety seats used in-flight must meet the following requirements:

Seat Manufactured Location Seat Manufactured Date  Required labels
United States January 1, 1981 –  February 26, 1985  Must bear the following label:

"This child restraint system conforms to all Federal Motor Vehicle Safety standards"
United States On or after February 26, 1985 Must bear two (2) labels, written in red:
  1. "This child restraint system conforms to all applicable Federal Motor Vehicle Safety standards"
  2. "This restraint is certified for use in Motor Vehicles and Aircraft"
Outside the United States Any date Requirements meet standards approved by the United Nations which must bear the following label:

The label is marked with a circle surrounding the letter "E" followed by the distinguishing number of the country that has given approval and a category and mass number of the seat

Safety seats that do not have a label stating certification for use in aircraft, or seats manufactured before January 1, 1981, are not acceptable for use in-flight.

Child booster seats or other types of child restraints, regardless of stamp/seals of approval the devices carry, may not be used during take-off, landing and surface movements.

Rear-facing Child Restraint System

Would you prefer your infant travel using a rear-facing child restraint system?

If you’d prefer that, then feel free to use your rear-facing child restraint system as long as you’ve:

  1. Purchased a seat for your infant
  2. Call your local representative prior to your flight to notify us that you’ll be using a rear-facing child restraint system

With the proper notification, we’ll be able to make the necessary accommodations to keep you, your infant and our guests as comfortable as possible.

And one last item: your child’s restraint system will not be counted as a carry-on item when a seat has been purchased for the infant.

Traveling today and forgot to let us know in advance? Don’t stress, just be sure to notify a Hawaiian Airlines airport customer service agent at check-in or at the gate prior to boarding.

Seat Restrictions

For the safety of your baby and all our guests, infants using child restraint systems will not be permitted to sit in the following rows:

  • Aisle seats,
  • Emergency rows and
  • Rows immediately in front of or behind an exit.
This restriction is enforced to avoid the safety seat from impeding on a possible aircraft evacuation.

Hawaiian Airlines reserves the right to change seating assignments in order to ensure compliance with federal regulations.

Additional Notes

Backless booster type seats, safety belts, belly belts, harness type and vest type devices are not allowed during taxiing, takeoff, and landing. Exception: CARES Harness. Cares is designed specifically for aviation use for children ages 1 and older, who weigh between 22-44 pounds. Cares is approved by the FAA as an alternative to a car seat for aircraft transportation and may be used during all phases of flight. Flight attendants must verify that the FAA certification label is sewn inside the red CARES loop.
